FDA Report on Sales of Antibiotics for Use in Food Producing Animals
Washington, D.C., December 18, 2018 – Today’s antibiotic sales report from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) represents the first year of implementation of the agency’s Judicious Use Program. As part of the Judicious Use Program, the animal health industry worked cooperatively with the government to bring all feed and water uses of medically important antibiotics under the supervision of a veterinarian and eliminate their use for growth promotion. With today’s report we are reminded of the important roles that veterinarians, producers and the animal health industry hold to ensure antibiotics are used only when needed to protect animal health.
The Animal Health Institute looks forward to continued work with customers, veterinarians and other partners in animal health to preserve a safe food supply, protect public health, and keep food animals healthy.
