Camps offer pets ‘pawlates’ to slim down (via the Columbian/AP)

A recent story from the Associated Press explores the emergence of health camps for canines. From “pawlates” to swimming and hiking, the camps sound much like summer camps for people.

According to the Association of Pet Obesity Prevention 53 percent of U.S. dogs are overweight or obese, up from 45 percent four years ago. In cats, the figure nears 58 percent. Overweight pets can suffer similar health affects as overweight humans, including diabetes, joint problems, heart disease and decreased life expectancy.
