AHI Applauds UN Declaration on AMR
September 27, 2024
The Animal Health Institute (AHI) welcomes the adoption of the United Nations political declaration on antimicrobial resistance (AMR). The declaration represents a global consensus for better animal health and disease prevention. Under the One Health approach, actions in animal health, human health and the environment present the best pathway for addressing AMR.
Over the past decade the US animal health industry has worked with the Food and Drug Administration to advance stewardship in the use of antimicrobials in animals, including eliminating production uses and ensuring veterinary oversight of all medically important antimicrobials used in animals. We continue to work with FDA on policy issues to advance antimicrobial stewardship in veterinary settings.
The declaration emphasizes the need for disease prevention, science-based solutions, and access to animal health solutions, including “the timely supply of quality and affordable essential veterinary medicines, vaccines and diagnostics.” We will continue to work with government regulators and stakeholders to achieve these goals.
We also recognize and appreciate the key role US government representatives played in crafting and supporting this consensus document.
